National Coaches Disagree With Big East Coaches, Rank Marquette No. 21 in Preseason Poll
The preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll came out just minutes ago, and to the surprise of no one, Marquette shows up in the list. Let's hit it!
I'll take 21st, especially since it means MU shows up as the 5th Big East team, one spot in front of the team picked by the Big East coaches to finish 5th, the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Thoughts on the list? Anyone you think might be ranked way too high to start the season *coughXaviercough*? Anyone not ranked high enough? Anyone missing?

I have one thought:
I’m going to miss the hell out of this conference when we’re playing at East Carolina in two years.
We pull our pants up and do our jobs here.
Someone at media day yesterday had an interesting point
TCU left without ever playing 1 game in any sport.
Why can’t Pitt & Syracuse come back?

Besides the fact
that they’d have to do it before the Big East replaces them, and that it’d be awkward as hell: nothing, I suppose.
We pull our pants up and do our jobs here.
I don't think anyone would object to them changing their minds
Except the ACC of course. But that’s some serious wishful thinking.

Overrated
Vandy – they return everyone from a team that lost again in the first round and they are 7th?
UW – I think the Badgers will really miss Leuer and should be around 20. Carrot Top is no Jon Leuer. Interesting flip b/c they are usually vastly underrated.
Memphis – they finished 4th…in Conference USA last year
There’s a good ESPNU podcast from a couple of days ago previewing the season. It’s a roundtable of Gottlieb, Katz, Dana O’Neill and Eamonn Brennan. Gottlieb busts Katz about 3 times for being the ultimate jocksniffer. “Don’t worry about the text you’ll get from the angry coach, just give me your opinion.” Classic. Love Gottlieb on podcasts.

I haven't thought much about basketball yet
But this could be a classic season with loaded teams in the Top 4. Thank you lockout!

Voted just right.
Trying to figure out the Xavier, Baylor, and Cal rankings though.

The preseason ranking is great and all....
But what if the team doesnt function well in the spotlight? They did fantastic in the underdog role, but we havent seen the team and how they perform when they are EXPECTED to be great and win a lot of games and stuff.
Also, is it just me or are there a lot of “IFs” associated with this team that will determine our success? (IF DJO and Crowder are consistent and crowder doesnt foul often we will do good and IF Cadougan can be a viable PG we will do good and IF Vander can get his offense from sucky-to-mediocre we will do good)

How many ifs were there the last two years?

Is there an advanced metric or statistic to measure ifs?

Good point, I guess we had more IFs last year
I guess someone could come up with it, but itd be too painful to calculate I’d imagine
Im just gonna save it till the first 4 games and see where we are at haha.

Ended the season at 20
Started at 21. Makes sense, I guess.
