An Anonymous Eagle Podcast, Now With More Todd Rosiak.
I promised you patient boys and girls that we'd deliver a guest at some point, and, despite the rain shower that the Red Storm dumped on Marquette's season (no, I'm not done with the weather metaphors yet), we're delivering: Marquette beat reporter Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel joined the Admiral and me to dissect the debacle against St. John's; to bemoan Marquette's defense; to figure out what's going on with our point guard situation; to talk JUCOs; and to champion Berry Weiss beer.
The link to the podcast is below, or you can subscribe to the feed on iTunes. Regardless, make this worth Todd's time. And if you're not following Todd on Twitter -- @Todd_Rosiak -- I don't even know why I'm talking to you. Rectify that, pronto.
As always: we apologize in advance -- especially to Todd. I'm not paying him enough to be my therapist.

It's not called a Honey Bear?
I could’ve sworn people were saying ‘Honey Bear.’

Honey/Berry is so delicious
… that people were slurring their words when they talked about it and dropping the ‘y’.
Leinie’s used to actually sell you a Honey/Berry pitcher, with a divider in the middle, but I can’t find it on the website any more.

Ugh
I was in a locals pub in London several years back and my travel companion had me ask if the barkeep could mix two beers to make a HoneyBear type drink. I don’t remember what the two beers were, but one was fruity. The barkeep was horrified and laughed at me for ordering it but served it anyway. After I ordered a second one for her, he was interested so he mixed his own. His eyebrows shot up when he tasted it and he just laughed b/c it was pretty damn good.
Damn could I go for an afternoon of boozing in a British pub about now.

Oddly enough
Lunardi still had MU solidly in yesterday and ahead of 14 other teams that were considered in.
That was before the Cincy - Louisville game.

I'm not following?
Did UC’s win vault 14 teams ahead of MU?

If anything
UC beating Louisville might raise their profile enough to make us beating them look like a better win than it otherwise would have.

Yeah, I didn't make my point very well:
I don’t think 11 Big East teams are getting in. Cincy is now firmly ahead of us, too.
I’m not smart enough to look at the other stuff and do anything but drool and mumble.
I don't agree
It has been said repeatedly that they don’t look at the number of teams from a conference, they judge every team on its own merits/warts. 9-10-11-12 from the Big East will have no bearing on our inclusion or exclusion – it depends on our resume. That being said, our resume is periously thin and I think we’ll get left out.

Just read an article by Andy Katz, and he made a good point regarding our discussion here
He was comparing the likes of Cincinnati (before last night) and Mich St to some of the other Mid-majors that are having nice seasons, ie. Utah St. The point he made that I liked, and is valid here, is that the selection committee doesn’t break down bids by conference. They lay out each team’s resume essentially “blindly” and look at who they beat, where, when, etc. , and who they lost to, where, when, etc. That said, we still have 3 Top25 RPI wins, whereas most of those other teams can hardly scrape by 1 in the Top50 RPI (much of this was mentioned by WB in the podcast). That said, I agree, and think we’re ok as long as we don’t put up any stinkers.
See you already made my point WB, but something else Katz mentioned
If it’s down to say Mich St vs Wichita St (or Utah St), who do you think they are going to put in? It’s an obvious choice here…..the school from the Major Conf gets in.
I agree

All right "Man of the People"
Name a mid-major that has impressed you this year outside of the CAA.
St Mary’s lost by 20+ at Vandy and just lost to San Diego last night.
Wichita St and Mo St dont’ have any impressive wins
Utah State’s best win is against Long Beach State
I’m all for getting mid-majors in, but this year’s crop is extremely weak

Even the mid-major darlings of Butler and Gonzaga are less than stellar this year
It’s kind of been a “perfect storm” of mid-major mediocrity this year…….and it could very well get MU in this year when it normally wouldn’t.

I was going to put "more", but I don't necessarily consider the loss to StJohns a stinker (or Gonzaga for that matter)
In terms of effort or result, yes a stinker, but in terms of where those teams stand competitively, both are in the Top50 so I don’t necessarily consider them a true “stinker”. Especially when other teams on the bubble have losses to Miami (OH), Virginia, Maryland, etc.
St. John's is more a stinker to us than it will be to the committee
We know what was on the line, and we feel especially let down by the loss. The committee will just see it as a loss to a hot team with good computer numbers. We can still recover from that loss.
I think it’s safe to say it’s not losing that bothered us all so much, but rather how we lost. That’s where the doom and gloom is stemming from. But on paper (not looking at the “how”) we’re still not in that bad of shape.
We all have to chase one rabbit. If we try to chase two rabbits we won't catch either of 'em.

You better hope that nobody on the Committee watched that game.

Do you really think it matters Eddie?
I don’t care how we get in, I want to be IN. Not only does it break a nice streak of consecutive seasons in the tourney, just being there is great publicity, and always helps in recruiting. Further, being there sets a standard for the next season and I’d hate to miss this year which could easily trend the following seasons. It’s very easy to slip off the map and into basketball irrelevance.

Hell
even with how down I am on the team, if we get a good matchup and/or an upset of a potential Round 2 foe, we could be in the Sweet 16. Nova made the Sweet 16 has an 11 or 12 in 2008.

with last night’s win over Valpo, UW-M is suddenly threatening to become Marquette’s best road win.

About the JUCOs moving forward
I dont think Buzz is going to get many JUCOs after this year, I agree with Todd because looking at the recruits, Buzz is looking like he is legitimately trying to do that foundation.
signature
I did some research on potential JUCO recruits a few days ago
And it looks like most of the top tier guys are already signed (according to Rivals’ JUCO Junction). And a lot of the guys that are available, and have been making news in the JUCO ranks, are guys that have flamed out or transferred out of various other programs. For the most part it seems like Buzz doesn’t usually go for the re-tread JUCO guys. He seems to favor the, overlooked/under-recruited guys that went the JUCO rout. Guys like Stan Simpson (fomerly of Illinois), Phillip Jurick (Tennessee) and Deshawn Mitchell (UNLV) are all drawing interest, but I really haven’t seen our name being mentioned around any of them. Maybe I’ll work on getting that info into a post one of these days.
