Marquette 1, UIC 0

Undefeated defending Big East division champions has a nice ring to it. On Friday the Golden Eagles took the field against the University of Illinios-Chicago with a 2-0 record. 90 minutes and a single goal later, they were at 3-0. An Eric Pothast header in the 40th minute off a Bryan Ciesiulka corner kick was enough to maintain Marquette's winning streak.

One of the UIC parents kept shouting "¡Andele andele!" from the visitor seating, but the Flames weren't exactly slacking off. UIC out shot Marquette 12-7, keeping goalkeeper Charlie Lyon busy. Lyon had to make five saves in order to post his second shutout of the season. There were a couple of close calls, most notably a Josh Beard shot taken with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match: Lyon tipped it just over the net to preserve Marquette's lead. UIC was then unable to score off Ivan Stanisavljevic's ensuing corner kick and the crowd at the Valley could remove their hearts from their throats.

Except for perhaps that UIC dad.
