Men's Soccer: #7/10 Marquette 2, Wisconsin 1

The Golden Eagles needed 2 overtimes at Valley Fields to close out a 2-1 win over rival Wisconsin and to reach a still perfect 9-0-0 record.

Scoring got underway in the 37th minute when Marquette's Sebastian Jansson, assisted by Adam Lysak and Ryan Robb, sent a header past Wisconsin goalie Chase Rau to put MU up 1-0. The Golden Eagle's lead held until the 78th minute when Nick Janus, who led the Badgers with 5 shots, finally slipped one past Marquette goalie Charlie Lyon to tie the game up at 1-1.

Just minutes after his header had gone wide and 117 minutes into the match, Andy Huftalin either got tired of the cold or being in a 4 way tie for goals this season (and not getting recognition from BtA) so he scored his 4th goal of the season to give Marquette the 2-1 victory and bragging rights over all the D-1 UW schools.

A quick aside: the Badger fans seated nearby while fairly polite appeared to be, like Rubie Q, new converts to watching soccer and entertained me when they wondered aloud if Marquette soccer was ranked. They also bemoaned the state of the Wisconsin football team, but moments later declared that Russell Wilson sucked. I had to smile when one wished that Wilson had made that Hail Mary in Seattle against Oregon instead and was promptly corrected by his lady friend who clearly felt that pass was an interception.

UPDATE! Here's a post match interview with Coach Bennett and Andy Huftalin, along with video of both MU goals!
