Women's Soccer: #19/#13 Marquette 2, Louisville 0

The Golden Eagles kept Cardinals goalie Chloe Kiefer busy Friday night in their Big East home opener. On the night Marquette owned a 25-8 shot advantage over the Cardinals, but kept coming up just short until the match's waning minutes when fouls by Louisville opened the door for the Golden Eagles to score.

With just over eighteen minutes remaining in the match, Mary Luba* found the corner of the net with an assist from Emily Jacobson off a free kick. Jacobson added an insurance goal ten minutes later off another free kick: the shot, almost from midfield, slipped past Kiefer and the Cards defense who were seemingly too focused on the Marquette offense nearest the net.

The Marquette defense typically smothers opponents and doesn't let them near the goal. Louisville had some success penetrating near the goal, but fortunately for the Golden Eagles, couldn't do much more. Goalkeeper Amanda Engel needed just three saves to record another shutout. Preseason BE offensive POY Christine Exeter was held to a singe shot during the match and Engel easily scooped it up.

The 2-0 victory puts Marquette at eight shutout wins on the season which pulls them into a tie with Georgetown for the Big East lead in shutouts recorded. The Golden Eagles will next face Cincinnati at home on Sunday afternoon.

*The official box score on GoMarquette.com credits Luba with the goal and Jacobson with the assist, but my notes per the in game announcement credit Kate Reigle with the goal and Luba with the assist.
