On Friday, the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) had their annual college draft. The draft consisted of four rounds with nine picks in each round, one for each team in the league. With the 35th overall selection, FC Kansas City selected former Marquette forward and Kansas City native Maegan Kelly.
In addition to setting Marquette's all time assists record this past season, Kelly was a three time all-Big East First Team selection in her collegiate career and earned national NSCAA Third Team honors her senior year. Kelly is one of three Big East players drafted, along with Georgetown's Emily Menges (#25, Portland Thorns) and Villanova's Jami Kranich (#32, Boston Breakers).
Kelly joins a FC Kansas City draft class that includes three other Kansas City area natives: Mandy Laddish from Notre Dame, Morgan Marlborough from Santa Clara University, and Frances Silva from West Virginia. In addition to those locally grown players, Kelly will also join a KC area player that she's even more familiar with: her older sister Katie plays defense for the Blues.
The NWSL has yet to announce their 2014 schedule, but the 2013 schedule ran from April to August. You can keep an eye on FC Kansas City's website for more info on Kelly as the season approaches.
