In their first ever try at the brass ring as a member of the Big East, the Denver Pioneers won the Big East men's lacrosse championship on Saturday afternoon. Four goals from Zach Miller led the way as the Pios defeated Villanova 14-7 to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Wildcats led 4-3 after the first quarter and the score was knotted at six at halftime. Denver scored the next eight goals of the game and held Villanova scoreless in the second half until just 88 seconds remained in the game. Miller scored the first three goals of the run and altogether, six different Pioneer attackers registered goals.
Villanova's scoring was led by Devin McNamara, who had two goals for the Wildcats. Jamie Faus made five second half saves to earn the win in net for Denver.
The Pioneers advance to the NCAA tournament, where they earned the #5 national seed in the field. They'll host North Carolina on Saturday, May 10, at 6:30pm Central in a game that will be televised on ESPNU.
