8.27.11 Weekend Preview/Review Combo

Here at Anonymous Eagle, we'd like to apologize for failing to provide you with a preview of the various Marquette athletic goings on this weekend before they got started last night. But we're back today to review last night's two events and give you a look at the [checks calendar] holy crap, 4 more events today and tomorrow? Let's get started, shall we?

Taylor Madigan got things started in the 7th minute of the 2011 MKE Cup with a header off a Megan Jaskowiak pass and #12/#13 Marquette women's soccer never looked back, taking a 3-0 lead at halftime and finishing with a 5-0 win over Saint Louis. 8 different Golden Eagles recorded points, including a goal and 2 assists for Lindsey Page and 3 assists for Britney Scott, tying a Valley Fields record. Keeper Natalie Kulla saw one shot in each half and only needed to make a save on the first one to keep her scoreless streak going before being relieved by Sofie Schunk in the 61st minute when MU had a 4-0 lead. MU's defense kept Schunk's first appearance of the season simple by not allowing Saint Louis to get a shot off for the remainder of the game.

Marquette looks to win the MKE Cup with a match against NR/#23 Long Beach State on Sunday morning at 11am at Valley Fields. LBSU is coming off last night's 3-2 loss to UW-Milwaukee. Long Beach State started their season off with wins over at the time #23 USC and Sacramento State.

Women's volleyball opened their season with their first match of the Hawkeye Challenge in Iowa yesterday. Coach Bond Shymansky's squad came out on the losing end against Saint Louis, 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 15-25, 25-27). MU started out strong, taking leads of 6-0 and 8-2 on the way to winning the first set and a 13-5 lead in the second set, powered by an 9 point run. SLU would rally to a 20-19 lead, eventually taking the 2nd set and riding the momentum to an easy 3rd set win. The Golden Eagles managed 24-24 and 25-25 ties in the 4th set, but the Billikens eventually managed the match point with their 27th point of the set.

Hawkeye Challenge action is already back underway with Marquette taking on Central Michigan as of this writing before a 7pm match tonight with the hosting Iowa Hawkeyes.

Men's soccer gets their season underway tonight with a 7pm match at Illinois-Chicago. The Golden Eagles return 8 starters, including All-Big East 2nd Teamer Calum Mallace, from a team that made it to the Big East Tournament semifinals in 2010 after finishing 7-8-4 during the regular season. WMUR will be streaming the match live here.
