Movin' It With Maegan took on a whole new meaning on Sunday afternoon.
Maegan Kelly scored three different ways to record a hat trick as #19/#20 Marquette defeated Cincinnati 5-0. Kelly got things started just into the 10th minute. Instead of firing a corner kick at the net, Kelly tapped it in to Cara Jacobson, who promptly gave it back to Kelly. The move caught the Bearcats (4-8-1, 1-5-0) off guard, allowing Kelly to drive to the net and fire one past keeper Kristina Utley and give Marquette (9-2-1, 5-0-0) a 1-0 lead.
Kelly had an unofficial assist on Marquette's second goal as Utley couldn't get a solid hand on her shot, allowing Taylor Madigan to clean up the loose ball. Kelly got back on the board in the 23rd minute when she was able to grab control of a bouncing ball in the box after a Vanessa Legault-Cordisco cross to put MU up 3-0. Kate Reigle closed out the first half scoring in the 40th minute after capitalizing on a slick move by Mary Luba to turn the ball around from the end line and send a cross back to the net. Kelly's third goal had a "blink and you missed it" aspect to it, as Reigle found her waiting in the box just 24 seconds into the second half.
Amanda Engel and Sofie Schunk split the goalkeeping duties straight down the middle. Both keepers played 45 minutes and both made just one save. The keepers had an easy time of it, as Marquette was able to keep the offensive pressure on, even late into the second half when coach Markus Roeders had turned to his deep bench players. 25 Golden Eagles saw action in this game, with everyone playing at least 8 minutes.
Speaking of Coach Roeders, here's a post match interview with him:
Up Next: Marquette heads out on an East Coast road swing next weekend, starting with a Friday night match with Providence.
