Holly Mertens continued her white hot play and wrapped up her second Big East Player Of The Week award of the season by leading Marquette with 21 kills on 28 attacks as the Golden Eagles defeated St. John's 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 24-26, 25-16) back on Sunday afternoon. Mertens has propelled herself into the top 5 in hitting percentage and the top 10 in kills in the Big East. While she's the only Golden Eagle amongst the kills leaders, she joins Danielle Carlson and Kelsey Mattai in hitting percentage. All three women are in the top 5 in accuracy.
Marquette's hitting was outstanding all match long, never hitting lower than .375 in any of the sets. The only lost set came when they allowed St. John's to hit over .250.
The win sets up a big final weekend showdown. Marquette, Louisville, and Notre Dame are all tied atop the Big East at 12-1. MU will go to Louisville tomorrow afternoon before returning home on Sunday to face Notre Dame. Two wins will clinch Marquette's first regular season Big East title.
