One of the things that has permeated the written tributes to Rick Majerus over the last few days is that he just wanted to talk ball. It didn't really matter who the conversation was with, but it's what came naturally to him.
So when someone suggested that Utah and Saint Louis play a home and home to honor Majerus to Matt Norlander, the natural thing to do was to blow it up to a four team event and include all four schools that Majerus coached at: Marquette, Ball State, Utah, and Saint Louis. Norlander went the extra step and checked in with the four schools to see what they said. Here's what Buzz Williams thinks:
"Nobody has brought it to my attention until now, but I am all for anything that's feasible from the scheduling perspective and would want to honor coach Majerus in any way possible," Marquette's Buzz Williams said by phone Wednesday afternoon. "What he's meant to Marquette and this community speaks for itself and anything we can do to honor him I would be completely for."
So Buzz is on board. Norlander came up with a few options, so let's go through them.
- A four year rotation, where each school gets to host a one day event, perhaps in the order that Majerus' career progressed.
- A pair of home and homes over two seasons. Norlander suggested MU & SLU pairing off and Utah and Ball State pairing off.
- A one time event, hosted by Marquette, since they've got the biggest building.
- A four year rotation, where three of the teams visit the fourth.
