Marquette scored first and Marquette scored last. There was a lot of scoring in the middle and by the end of it all, YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles won their first game of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, defeating the BYU Cougars by a score of 88-68.
Marquette built up a lead quickly, jumping out to a 14-4 start. It would balloon well into double digits and a Junior Cadougan layup at the buzzer put Marquette up 15. A 9-1 BYU run to start the second half made things interesting for the rest of the game, but Marquette pulled away late, powered by a couple of big three pointers from Todd Mayo.
Jae Crowder was his usual MANIMAL self, scoring 25 points and grabbing 16 rebounds while adding 4 assists and HEY NOW 5 steals. Mr. Honor Code Brandon Davies was the stand out for BYU with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Marquette will return to action on Saturday against 6 seed Murray State, who defeated 11 seed Colorado State already today. The time on that game is still up to the TV gods, so we'll let you know as soon as we do.
We'll be back later with a big time recap, but until then, let the thoughts fall in the comments section and be sure to check out the Open Thread for the rest of the day's action.
