Just 4 days after we found out about this fall's volleyball schedule, the athletic department has dropped the men's soccer schedule on us.
Marquette plays eight home games, seven true road games, one contest vs UWM at Engelmann Field, and one neutral match, also at Engelmann Field. In fact, the season opens with the Milwaukee Cup match vs the Panthers again this season. It'll be on the Friday of the first week of the 2013-14 school year, August 30. Say, how did last year's Milwaukee Cup match end?
Nice.
Marquette has six teams on the slate that participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Four of them - national runner up Georgetown, national semifinalist Creighton, St. John's, and Xavier - will come in conference play. The other two will come on the same weekend, as Marquette travels to Ann Arbor to play Michigan on Friday night before returning to Milwaukee to play Michigan State on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking of conference games, the Golden Eagles will get to play their two biggest rivals for the conference title, Georgetown and Creighton, at home. Unfortunately, the trade off for this is getting the short end of the stick in conference play. The Big East has decided to go with a schedule where all 10 teams play each other once. This means a nine game schedule, so some teams are going to get stuck with four home games and five road games. Marquette is one of those teams.
Marquette will open the conference schedule with a trip to Xavier on September 28, while the first home match in Big East play will be on October 9 against Butler. Senior Night will be on November 2 against Seton Hall. The official schedule lists Big East tournament quarterfinals taking place at campus locations, so it seems that only the top eight teams in the conference will qualify.
