Mady Vicker found the back of the net in the 14th minute and Amanda Engel made six saves for a clean sheet as Marquette beat Villanova 1-0 on Sunday.
Vicker found space on the right side by splitting the Wildcat defense and launching a shot from 20 yards out towards the far post. Her shot was on target, and Nova keeper Jami Kranich couldn't make a play on the ball.
Marquette had the shot advantage in the first half at 7-2, but Villanova turned it around in the second half. The Wildcats outshot Marquette 10-7 after intermission. The most notable of those shot attempts was an 86th minute penalty kick, after Emily Jacobson was issued a yellow card in the box. Emily Damstrom took the PK for Villanova, but Engel stopped the shot. VU was able to get a second shot off right away, but that one was blocked. A third attempt came just nine seconds later off the foot of Callie Duliba, but Engel came up with that one as well to preserve the shutout.
Jacobson's yellow card was a product of the match overall. 20 fouls were whistled, including 12 on Marquette, and five cards were issued overall, including one to VU's Kathryn Raynor with 89:59 standing on the clock.
Marquette moves to 9-3-0 overall and sits tied with Seton Hall for first place in the Big East. MU extends their unbeaten streak against any Big East opponent to 15 matches, and their Big East regular season unbeaten streak moves to 21 straight matches.
