Notes from the student section: Marquette Madness edition

Hello all and welcome back to notes from the student section with a very special Marquette Madness edition. Its a little late but I had mid-terms to study for. I just wanted to open up by saying thanks for all the reads and great comments last year so this will be a full season column this time around. One more thing, I will preface everything I say with the fact that it is only one scrimmage so my analysis should be taken with a grain of salt. So without further delay, the inaugural edition of notes from the student section 2014-15 edition.

Wojo's first public appearance in front of Marquette students and fans was Marquette Madness and let me tell you, the ghost of Al Mcguire was doing everything in its power to mess with Wojo, from fire alarms going off, to a 20 minute delay because someone broke the basket to what can only be described as a brutal looking scrimmage. No pros and cons section today just my dads (who has been coaching for what seems like forever now) and my analysis of the scrimmage.

First, it is a completely different offense. Way more dribble drives then I have seen in my previous three years under Buzz. Wojo also wasn't lying when he said they are going to play faster. Partly because they have to due to lack of size. I LOVE the defensive scheme. Full court man to man after every made basket is going to give teams absolute fits this year.

Now just a quick sentence or two for each of the players:

Derrick Wilson: hes going to get minutes whether people like it or not. He was great defensively all night and I was actually rather impressed with him, especially his little runner off the glass. Gave Duane fits.

John Dawson: I cant really say much about Dawson because he got the least amount of run. Did nothing to impact the scrimmage. He gets my vote for person most likely to transfer at the end of the year.

Matt Carlino: Shoots a lot but we need it. Good at finding driving lanes but gets into his own head too much. After finally making a 3 after missing the first 4, he went palms up and started jumping all over the place. Very vocal on the floor.

Luke Fischer: Moves really well for a big man. Really going to miss him for the first month of the season. Can easily see him being a 10 pt 7 rebound type of guy.

Duane Wilson: Looked brutal all night. Bad turnovers, has play-making ability but Derrick gave him fits. Also falls into the mentally weak category. After getting picked by Derrick he went up to him and bear hugged him instead of getting back on defense.

Steve Taylor: Needs to get fed the ball more. Also needs to learn to go straight up instead of taking an extra dribble. Will be a much more effective play with Luke on the court.

Sandy Cohen: Freshman that makes freshman mistakes.

Wally Ellenson: Best player of the night. He will get minutes next year, defense was great and he is so athletic. Much better than people give him credit for.

Jajuan Johnson: Shots weren't falling but he was still shooting. Shows flashes then disappears for stretches. Liked his aggressiveness.

Deonte Burton: Wasn't all there tonight. Don't blame him as he has a lot of other things going through his mind at the moment. (Rest in Peace Mrs. Burton)

Juan Anderson: Much improved all around. Hit some shots played good defense, I can see him starting until the return of Luke.

Guys, its going to be a rough year while these kids develop. But I will say this. 2015-16 is going to be a lot of fun. So enjoy watching these kids develop and get ready for a magical run in 15-16. Also, just want to thank my dad for coming up on Friday, was a good way to start out my last basketball season at Marquette as a student.

PS: Dunk contest between Deonte and Wally was top notch. Click on the link. It is so work the time.

PPS: Scott Merritt's dance moves may have been my favorite part of the entire night.
