Big East Big Five: Week Seventeen

Only two weeks of the regular season left, and business is picking up.

Ok, we're going with a slight change this week. Instead of trying to parse which game is more hilarious between Rutgers/UCF and Rutgers/USF, we're going to abandon making fun of the American Athletic Conference this week because I refuse to make a choice between two big time games for two of the Big East's bubble teams. We'll keep the Big East Women's Game of the Week because Saturday features what may be a de facto regular season title game.

Tuesday, February 25: Xavier at St. John's (6pm Central, Fox Sports 1) - I'm guessing that St. John's isn't thrilled about Villanova snapping their six game winning streak. They'll get a chance to take that frustration out on a Xavier team that has lost five of their last eight games. Both teams need a win for their postseason hopes.

Thursday, February 27: Georgetown at Marquette (8pm Central, Fox Sports 1) - Georgetown has just three games left on their schedule counting this one. Their other two opponents? Creighton and at Villanova. It's likely that the Hoyas will head into the Big East tournament with three straight losses if they don't get a win here, meanwhile, Marquette can afford to lose any games for the rest of the season.

Saturday, March 1: #9 Creighton at Xavier (4pm Central, Fox Sports 1) - Now we move into the two games that I refused to cut in order to make fun of the AAC. Regardless of what happens on Tuesday, Xavier can still do themselves a huge favor by being a poor host when the Bluejays come to town. Meanwhile, Creighton would love to take care of business to get one step closer to that regular season title and #1 overall seed in the Big East tournament.

Sunday, March 2: Marquette at #8 Villanova (noon Central, CBS) - And here's the second game. As you can probably guess, it's a big week for both Xavier and Marquette. The official Villanova schedule page lists this game as taking place in Philadelphia, so that'll mean Marquette manages to avoid playing in the Pavilion. Marquette made a strong showing against Xavier on their last broadcast television appearance, and a second major performance would be huge for the Golden Eagles. Just like Creighton, the Wildcats would like to get closer to a regular season title as well.

The Big East Women's Basketball Game of the Week

Saturday, March 1: DePaul at St. John's (noon Central, Fox Sports 1) - These two teams are both atop the Big East standings at 12-3 right now. They both have significant challenges in front of them this week, with St. John's hosting Marquette and DePaul visiting Villanova. Regardless of how they get through those games, and even with Creighton lurking at 11-4, whoever comes out of this game will have the inside track on the regular season title.
