Following a season where he started 19 of 20 matches and finished second on the MU team in goals, assists, and points, Louis Bennett II is attending the United States U-20 Men's National Team training camp that is opening today. LB2 is one of six forwards in the camp that's being hosted at North Carolina State University over the next week.
"I'm ecstatic that a Marquette men's soccer player has been called up to a United States national team," father and Marquette head coach Louis Bennett said in a statement released by MU. "The Under-20 program has professional, college and top academy players in the mix, so he's with great company. It’s another milestone in a year of milestones for the Marquette University men’s soccer program."
Bennett is joined by a few faces that might be familiar. Alex Muyl from Georgetown is one of the eight midfielders invited to the camp, as is Akron's Adam Najem. MU lost 1-0 to Georgetown in overtime during the 2013 regular season, but defeated Akron 1-0 in overtime in the second round of the 2013 NCAA tournament. Joining LB2 in the group of six forwards is Andrija Novakovich. The Muskego, WI, native had originally signed a letter of intent to join Marquette this fall, but was offered and accepted a professional contract with Reading FC.
The U-20 Camp will feature three friendly matches. They'll square off with the NASL's Carolina Railhawks and the Railhawk's U-23 squad, as well as the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL. You can get the full schedule of those matches from the official US Soccer press release.
