I expected a tough go of things with Notre Dame on Friday evening. They're the defending champs, they return a bunch of guys, etc., etc. What I didn't expect was David Selvaggi to find C. Nortey for a goal less than nine minutes into the game to give MU an early lead.
I did, on the other hand, expect an equalizer. It came before the half was out when Connor Kleotka beat his man and got either a deflection or a lucky bounce to sneak it past a diving Charlie Lyon. Notre Dame got a goal in the 66th minute from Leon Brown to take a lead for good. Marquette would end up outshooting Notre Dame 10-9 in the second half, but just four of those shots came after Notre Dame took the lead. In fact, the Irish held MU without a shot for more than 14 minutes as the clock evaporated, and only a Selvaggi shot just before the 89 minute mark broke that run.
Lyon made four saves in the match, including three in the first half as the Golden Eagles got outshot 8-1 in the opening 45 minutes. Patrick Wall made two saves, both in the second half, to pick up the win for the Irish. Alex McBride, Jack Alberts, and Daniel Szczepanek all made their collegiate debuts here, with McBride earning a spot in the starting XI.
