DePaul 71, St. John's 67 (OT) - What in the blue (demon) hell...
St. John's had a 29-19 lead at the break. Less than 50 seconds into the second half, Sir`Dominic Pointer recorded an old fashioned three-point play, and the lead reached 11 points. Yet, that lead was gone before the 13 minute mark when Forrest Robinson gave DePaul a one point lead on a pair of free throws.
For a little while, it seemed like St. John's was starting to assert themselves, but DePaul would just make a play or two, and the game would be tied again. In the end, it was the Red Storm that needed a pair of free throws from Rysheed Jordan to knot things at 61 and send the game to overtime.
24 seconds into the extra session, Billy Garrett, Jr., gave the home team the lead, and it started to seem like that would be the only points they would need. Neither team scored for the next two minutes, but the points came in a flurry over the final 150 seconds. Jordan tied it again late on a pair of freebies, but he also committed the foul that put Myke Henry on the line to put DePaul in the lead. From there, Chris Obekpa missed a shot, and Durrell McDonald knocked down two more from the charity stripe after a desperation foul from SJU.
Garrett had a game high 20 points, including splashing all 13 of his free throws. Four Johnnies scored in double digits, with both Jordan and Phil Green IV topping out at 17. Rumble In The Garden will have the details for you.
Since we had just one game yesterday to talk about, let's use some space to highlight the current Big East standings.
