Back on Monday, Marquette men's lacrosse continued their ascent up the Inside Lacrosse Top 20 poll. By picking up 251 points in the media polling, the Golden Eagles are now the #10 team in the country. This is, of course, the highest that Marquette has ever been ranked in the IL poll.
MU moved to 7-0 on the season after defeating Jacksonville and Mercer over the weekend. It's the best start in program history as well as the longest winning streak in program history. Marquette trails #9 Cornell by 37 points, while landing 38 points in front of #11 Albany. Without a game until March 21st, it's possible that the Golden Eagles could slip a little bit in the rankings next week. Three teams behind Marquette in the poll have games against teams in the Top 9 before next week's poll comes out, so you could understand how someone might sneak in front of MU if they were to win those games.
There are three Big East teams in the top 15, as Villanova has moved up from 19 to 15 this week, and Denver is a very solid #3 in the poll after picking up a win last week over a Notre Dame team that's now ranked #4 in the country.
Speaking of the Irish, that means that there are five ranked teams left on Marquette's schedule. Obviously, MU still has games left to play against Villanova and Denver. MU will also travel to South Bend to face the Irish on April 7th, and on top of that, Marquette will play host to #5 Duke on April 18th.
Marquette opens up Big East play in their next game. They'll be in Washington, D.C., to take on Georgetown on Saturday, March 21st.
