ESPN Releases 2016 Top 100 Basketball Recruiting Rankings

Hey, look, there's Sam Hauser...

Yes, Coach, you only have one verbal commitment for 2016 right now.

On Tuesday, ESPN updated their class of 2016 recruiting rankings.  They updated the rankings as well as expanded their existing Top 60 to a Top 100.  While it's probably important to keep an eye on names like Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum, and Josh Jackson, their current top three guys, our focus here is on Marquette's recruits.

Steve Wojciechowski currently has one verbal commitment for 2016.  That's small forward Sam Hauser from Stevens Point, Wisconsin.  In the new ESPN Top 100, Hauser is ranked #47 in the country.  That has him as the 14th best small forward in the country, the eighth best overall prospect in the Midwest region, and the only Wisconsin player in the top 100.  In fact, he's the only player from Wisconsin that ESPN's grading at all right now.

This is likely the first major recruiting ranking jump for Hauser that we'll see this summer.  As Paint Touches pointed out, as ESPN released their rankings, Hauser was ranked #149 in the country according to 247 Sports' Composite Rankings.  247's in house numbers had Hauser at #95, so it was everyone else's rankings that were keeping that number suppressed.

Hauser is one of two Big East commits in the top 100, and both are in the top 50.  Power forward Omari Spellman (Middletown, NY) is ranked #16 in the country and committed to Villanova.  This could end up being a very weird class of commitments as things go forward.  Yes, the ACC is in their seemingly usual spot atop the list of total commits at this point with five, but amongst the 23 commits are guys who have verballed to Harvard, Gonzaga, Rice, and Georgia State.

As far as Marquette's future recruiting goes, as things stand right now, Wojo has one scholarship that doesn't have anyone eligible to use it in the fall of 2016.  This is a pliable number, of course, until we see what Henry Ellenson decides to do after his first season.  In any case, there are four players that ESPN lists as holding offers from Marquette:

  • Javin DeLaurier - #47, #123 247 Composite
  • Tyler Cook - #58, #77 247 Composite
  • Kevin Huerter - #73, #109 247 Composite
  • Quentin Goodin - #95, #70 247 Composite

This list doesn't include the three guys that 247 Sports lists as "Warm" towards Marquette.  Those guys are as follows:

  • Kostas Antetokounmpo - Unranked, #88 247 Composite
  • Amir Coffey - #35, #34 247 Composite
  • Cassius Winston - #28, #25 247 Composite
For what it's worth as far as these kinds of things go, the almost always reliable Mark Miller of the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook has predicted Coffey will end up at Marquette, while Jerry Meyer, 247 Sports' Director of Basketball Scouting, has tabbed Antetokounmpo as a future Golden Eagle.
