Marquette Men's Soccer Falls In Double Overtime To Northern Illinois

Ohhhhhhhhh, this one sucks.

David Selvaggi gave MU a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute against NIU.

Northern Illinois equalized with less than a minute left in regulation and ended up taking the win on the night on Friday on a crazy shot in the 102nd minute, defeating Marquette 3-2 in double overtime.

The Golden Eagles were on the verge of a come from behind win against the Huskies after getting goals from Kelmend Islami (43') and David Selvaggi (82').  The Huskies had struck first on a goal from Giovanni Garcia in the 40th minute, but it had been almost all MU in the second half, as they had outshot NIU 5-1.... at least until the 90th minute.  That's when Luke Read poked home his third goal of the season for Northern Illinois with 55 seconds left in regulation as Marquette was unable to do keeper Luis Barraza a favor and clear the ball away from his net.

Marquette had a slight advantage in the first overtime, taking two shots to NIU's one, and both teams had one try each at a corner kick.  No one could end the match in the first extra session on a rainy night in Milwaukee, though, so that brought on a second 10 minute period.  Taylor Cole ended things with his first goal of the season, managing to control the ball just long enough to flick it to the far post, far away from a diving Barraza.

Marquette falls to 3-2-1 on the season as they snap a four match unbeaten streak and suffer their first loss since the season opener.

Up Next: Believe it or not, it's time for the Big East schedule to start.  The Golden Eagles will mix in two more non-conference matches as they get started with league play, but they'll open the conference slate with a road trip to St. John's next Saturday.  The Red Storm (1-6-0) lost 2-1 to Wisconsin on Saturday and will play a mid-week match against Quinnipiac before facing MU.
