No, it’s not Markus Howard vs the rest of the team.

Name: Howard University

Location: Washington, D.C.

Founded: 1867

Enrollment: 10,300

Nickname: Bison

Why “Bison?”: I’ve got nothing for you. There doesn’t appear to be anything on their athletic website or regular school website about it.

Notable Alumni: Ben Ali, co-owner and founder of Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C.; Emmy award winning choreographer & actress Debbie Allen; Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first ever president of Nigeria; civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael; actress Taraji P. Henson; Fox Sports broadcaster Gus Johnson; US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall; Toni Morrison, Nobel Prize & Pulitzer Prize winning author; actress Phylicia Rashad; actor Chadwick Boseman; and Grammy award winning singer Roberta Flack.

Last Season: 12-20, but 10-20 against Division 1 foes. The Bison went 6-10 in the MEAC and lost in their first game of the conference tournament.

This Season: Howard lost their season opener on the road against Michigan, 76-58. The Bison are picked to win the MEAC, but the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, James Daniel III, is out for 4-6 weeks with an ankle injury.

Current KenPom Ranking: #276

KenPom Projection: 15-15, with an 11-5 record in the MEAC

Don’t Take Them Lightly: Howard trailed the Wolverines 41-36 with 12 minutes to play. Yes, they gave up a 14-4 run after that, but, y’know, closer than it should have been.

Stat Leaders

Points: Damon Collins, 12.0 ppg
Rebounds: Solomon Mangham & Dalique Mingo, 5.0 rpg
Assists: Solomon Mangham, 3.0 apg

Big Man? Marcel Boyd (6’10”, 230 lb.) is a very good rebounder on both ends of the floor and an excellent shot blocker as well. He is turnover prone, however, so double teams from the Marquette guards should be very useful.

Head Coach: Kevin Nickleberry is in his 10th season overall in Division 1 and 7th season at Howard. He has an overall record of 108-175 with a record of 59-131 with the Bison.

All Time Series: This is the first ever meeting between Marquette and Howard.
