Last season, Marquette got two early wins over ranked squads and spent most of the season in the top 20.  This year, they haven't had those ranked team wins, and thus they've only been ranked for one week.  That moved to two weeks on Monday morning, as the Golden Eagles are #17 in the brand new Cascade/Maverik media top 20.  Marquette's previous week in the top 20 this season was also spent at #17.

The Golden Eagles are just one spot higher than the Villanova squad that was ranked #6 on Saturday when Marquette earned the 11-3 win over the Wildcats.  Nova also lost in an ugly fashion to Brown last week, who moved up from #3 to #2 in the new poll.  Notre Dame has taken over the #1 spot from still undefeated Yale after the Irish knocked off #7 Syracuse on Saturday, sending the Orange tumbling down to #9 even though they've now lost three straight games.  Denver picked up two first place votes and stayed steady at #4 after defeating Georgetown easily.

Duke suffered a defeat to North Carolina last week, which sent the Blue Devils dropping from #11 to #13 in the poll while boosting the Tar Heels from #17 up to #11.  Providence is hiding out down in the "Receiving Votes" department after a 15-10 win over St. John's on Saturday.

Speaking of St. John's, Marquette will head to Queens this weekend to defend that new national ranking.  Faceoff is scheduled for 11am Central, and the game will be televised on ESPN3.
