Ever heard of Hoop Seen? I’ve seen the name before, and Corey Evans, a familiar name in recruiting circles, is their managing editor and national analyst for men’s college basketball recruiting. They released a brand new “post-summer” top 125 recruiting ranking for the Class of 2017 on Tuesday.

You can read Evans’ breakdown of the top end of the rankings if you want, but as Marquette fans, we’re not that interested in that aspect of things. Head coach Steve Wojciechowski and his staff aren’t involved with any of the top five guys (or top 10 or top 20) in the class of 2017, and if that makes you upset, you’re probably reading the wrong website.
There are five players with some level of Marquette interest in Hoop Seen’s top 125.
- Kimani Lawrence - #45
- Jamal Cain - #65
- Bruno Fernando - #70
- Xavier Tillman - #105
- Jordan Nwora - #106
I can’t speak to Marquette’s involvement with Lawrence other than pointing out that he was offered a scholarship in early July. I’m not sure where Marquette stands with Fernando, either. The 6’10”, 225 lb., center had been offered a scholarship back when he was a part of the class of 2016. He committed to SMU, but ended up decommitting, reclassifying to 2017, and going back to Monteverde Academy for a post-graduate year. I have no idea if this was a choice or not on his part, but let’s just say that if it wasn’t a voluntary decision, then I’m guessing that Marquette is no longer interested in Fernando.
The other three guys are clear targets for Wojo, and the highest ranked one is the most interesting one. Jamal Cain recently announced that he’ll be visiting Marquette in September. At the time of the announcement, I was slightly skeptical about Cain, as he barely counted as a top 200 recruit in the 247 Sports Composite rankings. As of this writing, he’s still sitting at #200. But Hoop Seen really loves him, as does Rivals, and 247’s internal rankings have him at #163. We’ll put a “wait and see” sticker on the 6’7”, 175 lb., small forward from Michigan.
Xavier Tillman also has a visit to Milwaukee scheduled as part of a very busy September at the Al McGuire Center that includes visits from Theo John and Hasahn French, both of whom are not in Hoop Seen’s top 125. Jordan Nwora has an offer in hand from Marquette since back in April, and he made an unofficial visit to campus back in late June.
