Former Marquette Golden Eagles guard Jimmy Butler and his USA teammates square off with Argentina on Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics men’s basketball tournament.
The U.S. made it through group play undefeated, although things got increasingly dicier as the tournament went on. Team USA started with blowout wins over China and Venezuela, but followed that up with a “closer than the final margin” 10 point win over Australia. From there, they eked out two three-point wins over Serbia and France to snag the top spot in Group A.
That earned them a quarterfinals date with the Argentinian team, which finished in fourth place in Group B. Argentina got wins over Nigeria, Croatia, and Brazil in group play, but lost to Lithuania and Spain.
