Former Marquette Golden Eagles great and current Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler and his USA teammates square off with Spain on Friday in the first of two semifinal games in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics men’s basketball tournament.
After looking a little shaky while still finishing group play undefeated, Team USA got into trouble fast against Argentina in the quarterfinals, trailing 19-9 after six minutes. They turned that around with a 27-2 run capped off by an old fashioned three point play by Butler and never looked back on their way to a 105-78 victory.
Spain defeated France, 92-67, in the quarterfinals. Nikola Mirotic, Butler’s teammate on the Bulls, was the go-to guy, finishing with 23 points and five rebounds. Spain did their damage in the middle two quarters of the game, outscoring Les Blues by a combined 17 points in the second and third quarter.
This will be a rematch of the gold medal game in the 2012 Olympics. Team USA got the W in London, 107-100, with Kevin Durant stoking the American fires with 30 points.
