We keep inching closer to the start of the lacrosse season, and today’s milestone is the debut of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s coaches poll.
YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles start the year ranked #18 in the country. They picked up 49 points in the balloting, nestling them neatly between #17 Ohio State’s 52 points and #19 Air Force’s 45 points.
In a “fun” twist, Marquette will play both of the two squads on either side of them in the USILA poll before the calendar flips over to April. Luckily for the Golden Eagles, both of those games will be at home. MU will also host #3 Denver and #7 Duke in the final two home games of the season. The Pioneers can be considered the preseason favorites in the Big East this season with their six first place votes in the USILA poll. We round out the list of MU opponents with a preseason ranking with Notre Dame, who start out the season at #4.
Three more teams on the schedule are receiving votes in the poll but fall outside the official top 20 rankings. There are two Big East foes in Villanova and Georgetown, as well as Richmond. All three of those games, as well as the Notre Dame game, will be on the road for the Golden Eagles this season.
Marquette opens the season by visiting Jacksonville on February 18th.
