Marquette Volleyball Preview: vs Georgetown Hoyas & vs Villanova Wildcats

The Golden Eagles return home to take on Georgetown and an apparently tough Villanova team

Alright, folks, the Golden Eagles split last weekend’s matches, getting swept by #14 Creighton and sweeping Providence. A win over Creighton would have been nice but as it happens, we embarrassed them at the Al and they swept us at Sokol Arena. It’s fine, we will most likely see them again in the Big East Tournament Finals at the, wait for it...Al McGuire Center. So, this could be a good sign for the Golden Eagles given their NCAA Tournament hopes are getting slimmer with the three Big East losses along with a decent noncon record. Creighton did do a good job of containing Allie Barber, holding her to only 10 kills. The Golden Eagles now host a bad Georgetown team and then look for revenge on a Villanova team that shocked the Golden Eagles when they played out on the Main Line.

A heads up for you: Marquette needs just one win to clinch a Big East tournament berth. Losses by Villanova (playing DePaul on Friday before coming to Milwaukee on Saturday) and Seton Hall (visiting St. John’s on Saturday) would also do it, but isn’t it much more fun to clinch with a win?

Hey, Casual Hoya! Your volleyball team is bad. I said it in the first preview against Georgetown, the volleyball team is just like Georgetown’s men’s basketball team, not very good at all. Their lone conference win came against Butler...... a team that beat Marquette. Crap. But hey, at least they’re good at soccer.

Symone Speech continues to lead Georgetown’s offense with 382 kills on the season. That averages out to 3.71 kills per set. Speech has been really good for the struggling Hoyas this season and is progressing a lot throughout her time in D.C. Looking at her three year stats, Speech has increased in each category year by year. Hopefully the Hoyas will be better next year because they are wasting Speech’s talent.

Paige McKnight is still setting for Georgetown and is averaging 9.32 assists per set. She pretty much only sets to Speech and Alyssa Sinnette. McKnight had 18 assists when Marquette came to visit.

Marquette should win this one easy. Georgetown is a bad team and Marquette is a good team, it’s pretty simple to wrap your head around this pick. Marquette will sweep Georgetown in volleyball and then destroy Mt. St. Mary’s in basketball. A bad day for the DMV all around.

It has been an odd season for Villanova. They are a very streaky team, staying just above .500 for conference. They shocked Marquette in five sets when the Golden Eagles traveled to Philly, but have gone just 3-3 since then and currently find themselves on the outside of the top four spots in the league and thus out of the Big East tournament.

Last time we checked in on Villanofun, Allie Loitz led the team in kills, but it seems Loitz has gone down with an injury. Amanda Pedersen-Henry is the new leader with 239 kills (2.63 k/s). She has really stepped up with the absence of Loitz.

Emma Decker has continued to set for Nova and is averaging 10.46 assists per set. She continues to help on offense and defense as she has recorded 153 digs.

This is a must win game for Marquette as they look for revenge over Nova. Allie Barber will look to return to her unreal stats. Marquette will win this match 3-1. Nova is not a great team, but they are definitely not a bad team. Look for Ryan Theis’ squad to come out firing this weekend.
