That’s what a 17-1 victory in your opener can do for you.

On Saturday, Marquette Golden Eagles men’s lacrosse stomped down Jacksonville by a final of 17-1.

On Monday, the Maverik media poll voters rewarded the Golden Eagles for their season debut by boosting them in the top 20, sliding MU from #20 a week ago up to #16.

Marquette had started out the season at #18 in the preseason poll, but with teams moving around a bit with their seasons starting up, they slid down to #20 while staying inactive until Saturday afternoon. Their first 60 minutes of action apparently reminded the voters exactly why they liked the Golden Eagles to begin with, thus the bump up the charts.

The rest of the top 20 is littered with Marquette opponents. MU’s very next game will be against a ranked opponent, with the Richmond Spiders popping in at #14. Big East favorites Denver are tied for the #1 spot in the poll with Maryland, although the Pios got there with the most first place votes of anyone this week. Notre Dame turns up at #5, Duke is #18, and Ohio State shows up at #19. Down in the Receiving Votes department is Air Force, who will come to the Valley for the final game of March, along with Providence.

Marquette returns to action on Saturday when they visit #14 Richmond. Faceoff is scheduled for 12pm Central.
