If you get slapped around by a team ranked in front of you, then you should probably drop out of the top 20.
That’s what happened to Marquette following their 9-2 loss to #14 Richmond on Saturday, where the Spiders held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the entire second half. After being ranked #16 in the country last week, MU has dropped out of the Maverik media top 20 poll this week as a result.
The Golden Eagles are still getting votes, just not enough to do better than the 80 points earned by #20 Duke this week. Unofficially, Marquette is the #23 team in the country, but the poll only goes out to 20th place.
MU is joined in the RV category by fellow Big East team Providence as well as future Marquette opponent Air Force. Up in the poll proper, there’s all sorts of future Marquette opponents as well: #1 Denver, #4 Notre Dame, #17 Ohio State, and #20 Duke. There’s also, of course, now former opponent Richmond, which moves up to #12 in the country this week.
You can check out the entire poll right here.
Marquette returns to action on Friday night when they host the aforementioned #17 Buckeyes at 7pm in the first home game of the season. It’ll be the second half of a doubleheader in the Valley Field Bubble for the first day of the Midwest Lacrosse Classic, with Detroit vs. Bellarmine getting the afternoon start.
