Marquette lost to Seton Hall in the Big East tournament quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. It’s been nothing but waiting for the Golden Eagles since then as they did not do enough in the regular season to be a stone cold lock for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
You might think they’re in, you might be 100% sure they’re in, you might see no way the committee leaves them out. You might even be right. But 19 wins and 12 losses is not an obvious candidate for an at-large berth. They’re not going to be in the top half of any of the regions, aka seeded #1 through #8, so even the most positive minded Marquette fan has to admit that there is at least a glimmer of a chance that they get left out of the field.
The selection committee readily admits that the games on Selection Sunday don’t have much of an impact on the bracket, outside of the possibility that a bid thief is waiting to snag an at-large spot. Here’s what Marquette’s at-large profile looks like after the conclusion of Saturday’s games.
