Congratulations to (deep breath) Vermont, Duke, Iowa State, Villanova, North Dakota, UC Davis, Middle Tennessee, Kent State, North Carolina Central, Nevada, Arizona, New Orleans, and New Mexico State on their NCAA tournament automatic bids!
Whew, that’s a lot of teams.
We still have six more auto-bids to hand out today, and I feel like that number keeps growing for some reason. I know part of it is the television providers telling the conferences where their available windows are, but the selection committee also keeps telling the conferences that, unless they involve a bid thief, these Sunday games don’t have any impact on the bracketing and seeding of the tournament.
Oh well.
The good news about today’s games not impacting the bracket is that there wasn’t much on the line for Marquette anyway. The Big Ten title game is between two teams that the Golden Eagles lost to, so the RPI boost from one of them winning is mitigated by the affect of the other one losing. Over in the Atlantic 10 title game, if Rhode Island wins, they’ll definitely be in the tournament, but they might have already been in as an at-large team. Bracket Matrix updated late last night and had the Rams in as the very last at-large team.
Here’s your schedule of events for the day. See you this evening when we find out if Marquette has done enough to get in for the first time since 2013.....
