I know you’re not hard up for something to do on this fine holiday weekend Saturday, because the NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament spools back up with the two semifinal games.
In the first game, #3 Ohio State faces Towson. The Tigers are the only unseeded team in the Final Four, beating #7 Penn State and #2 Syracuse on their way to the semifinals. OSU beat Loyola (MD) and Duke in their two previous games to earn their first ever Final Four berth.
The second game of the doubleheader in New England is the one that’s more important to Big East fans. 2017 Big East regular season champion and #5 seed Denver squares off with #1 Maryland in the late game, and it’s a battle of two programs with huge national importance. The Terrapins are looking for their first national championship since 1975, but this is their fourth straight Final Four and sixth in the past seven years. Five of those times, they’ve lost in the national championship game, so you’d better believe that Matt Rambo and company are hungry for a championship. The Pioneers, on the other hand, won their first ever national championship just two years ago, but they’ve been a powerhouse ever since Bill Tierney left Princeton to lead the team. This is the fifth Final Four at Denver for Tierney, all in the last seven seasons.
