Golden Eagles took another step towards $2 million on Sunday afternoon as they beat Majerus SLU Crew, 81-70, in the second round of the 2017 edition of The Basketball Tournament. The Marquette alumni now advance to the Super 16 round for the second straight summer.

This one was a bit more of a team effort than Saturday’s opening round win, with Darius Johnson-Odom getting the team high in points with just 17. Davante Gardner almost caught him with 16, plus five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Jamil Wilson was dangerous off the bench, scoring 11 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and adding an assist and a steal. MSC was led by a trio of double digit scorers, with Jordair Jett getting the game high 19 in the losing effort.

The game started out with a pair of runs. Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead, then Majerus SLU Crew went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. They held on to that lead for a while, and I’d love to tell you more about how the Marquette guys bounced back from the lead that the Saint Louis team assembled, but that’s not happening. Since I wasn’t in Peoria, I was watching on WatchESPN, and that meant missing a large chunk of the end of the first half thanks to someone leaning on the commercial button. When it went to the poorly timed commercial, MSC had a small, but easily surmountable lead. Somewhere in the middle of that, Golden Eagles blasted past them, taking a 35-30 lead. They maintained that margin at 38-33 at the break.

The early part of the second half was played at roughly that same margin. Golden Eagles had a lead, but it never felt safe. That came true just past the 10 minute mark, as MSC briefly took a 58-57 lead. The MU guys constructed a 14-2 run to create some space and were able to maintain that down the stretch for the win. Majerus SLU Crew did lose five style points when they fouled down nine with just under a minute to play. Guys. Not cool. Take your L.

Up Next: Golden Eagles returns to action on Saturday for the Super 16. That will take place in Brooklyn on the campus of LIU-Brooklyn, where Purple & Black, the Kansas State alumni team, will be waiting for the Marquette team. They defeated Canton Bulldogs and Hilton Magic Legends on their way to the Super 16.
