Marquette Volleyball Earns Votes In New AVCA Top 25 Poll

They’re not ranked, and for good reason, but the win over Hawaii boosted the Golden Eagles’ profile.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association released their first in-season poll of 2017 on Monday, and YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles have picked up a few votes.

Not a lot, only enough to tally 11 points following their 1-2 opening weekend. The lone win was against at-the-time #20 Hawaii, thus the interest in the Golden Eagles. MU also had competitive matches against UCLA and San Diego, who were ranked #13 and #22 respectively at the time. 11 points is good enough to be unofficially ranked #36 in the country for the time being, tucked right in between Pittsburgh with 12 points and Duke with 10.

UCLA is up to #11 in the new poll, while San Diego ascends to #17. Elsewhere on the Marquette schedule, you’ll find Kentucky at #13 and Creighton at #7. The Bluejays pulled off a win against Washington over the weekend, causing the Huskies to drop from #3 to #8. Wisconsin is up to #6 in this week’s poll.

There are two teams on Marquette’s schedule joining the Golden Eagles in the “Also Receiving Votes” department. Wichita State, which awaits Marquette in Indianapolis on Saturday, is unofficially #26 in the country with 73 points, while Hawaii earns just 30 points to be unofficially ranked #30.

This weekend, Marquette will be playing three matches in the span of about 28 hours. After opening the IUPUI-hosted tournament against Miami (OH) on Friday afternoon, the Golden Eagles will play Wichita State on Saturday morning and then the hosting Jaguars at night.
