A strong team effort on Friday afternoon led to a 3-0 Marquette win over Miami-Ohio. It was MU’s first match in this weekend’s Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by IUPUI in Indianapolis, and the W moved Marquette to 2-2 on the year.
The first and third sets were fairly similar in nature, with Marquette winning both easily on scores of 25-14 and 25-16 respectively. The second set was different, as the Golden Eagles had to stave off set point at 24-23 in order to pull out a 26-24 win. Freshman Hope Werch was the key player on the late rally, pairing up with fellow freshman Elizabeth Orf on a block to create the 24-all tie, then getting the set-clinching kill after a Manon Geoffroy service ace.
Marquette hit at least .340 in every set on their way to hitting .412 as a team in the win, but it was defense that made the difference. They held Miami’s hitting under .120 in the first and third frames, and while the Redhawks hit .364 in the second, that was good enough defense to MU to stay competitive and sneak the win late.
The attacks and kills were spread around in this one, as Allie Barber and Jenna Rosenthal tied for the match high with nine kills. Orf chipped in eight of her own while hitting a riiiiiiiidiculous .727. Somehow Lauren Speckman topped that hitting percentage by putting all four of her attacks on the ground for kills and then tossed up 36 assists in her free time.
Up Next: Marquette will be back in action bright and early on Saturday in order to fit in two matches. Wichita State, who just barely missed the AVCA top 25 this week, awaits at 9am Central, while host IUPUI is the opposition in the 6pm CT nightcap. As of this writing, WSU is easily handling the Jaguars late in the second set of their Friday night match.
