Marquette is 2-18 all time against Wisconsin. That’s right, they have nine times as many losses as wins. Ninnnnnnnnnnnne times. This will be the first meeting since the 2008 season and MU will be looking for their first victory against the Badgers since **rubs eyes** yep, since 1978, back before Marquette’s program actually joined Division 1.

The Golden Eagles are in for a tough one against #5 ranked Wisconsin. The Badgers are undefeated at 7-0 and have swept opponents in every match. This is the tail end of the non-conference schedule for both Marquette and Wisconsin as each team gears up to play their respective conference schedules starting next week.

Leading the offense for Wisconsin is star freshman Dana Rettke. The 6-8 superstar from Riverside, Illinois was listed as the 8th best senior in the class of 2017 by the PrepVolleyball Seniors list. Rettke has made an immediate impact for the Badgers so far leading the team in kills with 81 (3.86 k/s). Let me tell you something, I am STOKED to watch Rettke go up against Jenna Rosenthal. There is nothing better than having two sensational middle hitters go up against each other. While Rettke gets most of the sets her way, Wisconsin likes to move the ball all around the court and spread some wealth among hitters. Kelli Bates is second on the team in kills with 65 and Tionna Williams has 57 of her own.

Setting for the Badgers is another sensational freshman in Sydney Hiley. The 6 foot setter from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota was ranked as the #3 senior in the class of 2017 by the PrepVolleyball Senior Ace list. Hiley, just like Rettke, has been nothing short of amazing since stepping foot on campus. She has recorded 287 assists this season which comes out to a whopping 12.71 assists per set. The Badgers are a scary good team and what makes them even scarier is that they are a very young team with their superstars only being freshman. Look for Wisconsin to be in a National Championship game within the next couple years.

As much as it hurts me to say this, my prediction for this one has to be Wisconsin in three. Marquette is playing their best volleyball of the season right now, but the Badgers are very good and know how to stop Jenna Rosenthal and Allie Barber. Badgers in three, but don’t be too surprised if the sets are close.

Match #11: vs Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-4)

Marquette is 8-6 all time against those other Golden Eagles from way down south. This is the first meeting between the two teams since the 2011 season when MU came away with a 3-0 victory.

Well folks, here we have a battle of the Golden Eagles. The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will travel well North to take on both Wisconsin and Marquette. Southern Miss stands at 9-4 so far this season with losses coming to Miami, Southern Alabama, Tulane and Oklahoma.

Kylie Grandy and Catherine Repsher lead the Southern Miss offense with 135 and 132 kills respectively. Grandy, a 5-11 outside hitter, is averaging 2.93 kills per set so far and had a double-double in their latest win over Southeastern Louisiana with 11 kills and 10 blocks. Repsher, a 6-1 middle blocker, is averaging 2.87 kills per set and had 10 kills in the win over Southeastern Louisiana. I don’t want to be mean but look for Southern Miss to get destroyed by Wisconsin.

Setting for the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss is Sarah Bell. The 5-10 junior earned a spot on the All-Conference USA team last year and has recorded 544 assists (11.33 a/s) so far this season. Bell loves to spread the ball around the court whether it is to Grandy or Repsher.

Marquette should win this one in three. They could possibly be looking for revenge coming off a loss to Wisconsin which would help fuel the fire to a convincing victory over Southern Miss. Our Golden Eagles will come out victorious and will reign supreme as the best college team with the nickname the Golden Eagles.
