IT’S HAPPENING! Everybody stay calm, just stay calm because the Big East portion of the Marquette Golden Eagles’ schedule is here. Coming off a challenging opening schedule, the Golden Eagles stand at 6-5. Marquette opened the season with an upset win over Hawaii, but lost the next two games to UCLA and San Diego. The win over Hawaii is not looking like too big of an upset at this point in the season as Marquette has proved to be a better team. The Golden Eagles did let a quality win slip away as they blew a 2-0 lead to Wichita State. As of late, the Golden Eagles have been rolling along just fine, pushing #10 Kentucky to four sets with all of the sets being close and even taking a set from Wisconsin, which no one else has done this season. The Golden Eagles will now travel to Indianapolis to begin Big East play.

The Butler Women’s Volleyball team has started with a record of 10-2 with a quality win over Ball State. Unlike Marquette, Butler did not open the season with many challenges. They got swept by #19 Michigan and lost 3-1 to Eastern Michigan, who is ranked #180 in the country according to BennettRank (shoutout to the boss for giving me that stat in his Big East Volleyball: Where are We Now? blog).
Leading the offense for the Bulldogs is Whitney Beck. The 6 foot outside hitter has 173 kills (3.93 k/s) on the season, which is 3rd in the Big East. Beck recorded 24 kills in a five set victory over Robert Morris earlier this season. Natalie Ravenell and Brooke Gregory are second and third on the team in kills with 106 and 105 kills respectively. Look for Big East Player of the Week Allie Barber and Jenna Rosenthal to set the blocking schemes around Beck.
Setting for Butler is Makayla Ferguson. The 5-9 senior is averaging 10.30 assists per set which amounts to a total of 453 assists so far on the season. Ferguson had 53 assists in the win over Robert Morris. Also something to note, the Bulldogs have the best libero in the Big East stats-wise in Taylor Takeda. The 5-4 junior is averaging 4.70 digs per set which leads the Big East.
I say Marquette takes this one 3-0. They played a very tough opening schedule in preparation for one reason and that was to try and win a Big East title. The Big East is not the best volleyball conference so if Marquette wants to make the tournament they are gonna need to rack up all the Big East wins they can get.
