Marquette dropped a news bomb on us on Wednesday when they announced the 2018 men’s lacrosse schedule outta nowhere. According to the fine and upstanding folks at College Crosse, it’s the first schedule to be released. That’s pretty neat!

It’s a pretty standard set of opponents for the Golden Eagles if you’ve been following the team for the past few years. Marquette has played all of their non-conference foes at least twice before with the exception of Michigan, which will be the first meeting between the two teams. I’ve long thought that MU should play the Wolverines as a regular season contest and not just exhibitions that they’ve had the past few years. Michigan started their program the year before Marquette, and given the proximity of Ann Arbor to Milwaukee, it seems like a natural rivalry game.

There is a fun shift in a running rivalry series this year. For the first time since 2014, Notre Dame will be coming to Milwaukee to tangle with the Golden Eagles. The last four encounters with the Fighting Irish have come at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, including the 2017 NCAA tournament contest between the two. Notre Dame has won all six meetings between MU and ND, although the margin was just one goal in both the 2016 and 2017 regular season encounters.

The Notre Dame game will be the start of a hellish stretch to close the season for Marquette. That one is a mid-week game, followed by hosting Providence three days later for Senior Day. MU will wrap up the regular season with trips to Duke and Denver on the next two Saturdays, and that will almost assuredly not be a picnic on any level. Marquette is winless in five tries against Duke, and the Golden Eagles have yet to beat the Pioneers in five regular season contests. However, Marquette does have the two Big East tournament trophies from the past two seasons to prove that they are capable of beating Denver.

Here’s the full schedule for your perusal, starting with the home and season opener against Jacksonville on February 17th.
