Is Kentucky Off The Board For Quentin Grimes?

The Wildcats have a five star point guard for 2018. Do they need or want another or does Grimes have a final three now?

On Friday, the rich got richer as Kentucky picked up a commitment from Class of 2018 top 10 point guard Immanuel Quickley. It’s actually the first commitment for that recruiting class for John Calipari and the Wildcats, but hey: it’s Kentucky we’re talking about here. They’ve been either #1 or #2 in 247 Sports recruiting rankings for this entire decade.

As mentioned above, Quickley is a point guard, and a really good one. He’s ranked #8 overall in the country by 247 Sports and they have him as the #2 point guard behind Tre Jones. I’m bringing all of this up because Darius Garland is #3...... and Marquette target Quentin Grimes is #4.

On September 13th, Grimes announced that he was down to four schools: Texas Longhorns, Kansas Jayhawks, Marquette... and Kentucky. It’s entirely possible that Quickley’s commitment to the Wildcats has taken UK off the board for the Houston area native. It wouldn’t be the first time that a school took themselves out of consideration for Grimes. Arizona received a commitment from Jahvon Quinerly in early August, just a few days after Grimes included the Wildcats in his top seven.

That seemed to immediately eliminate Arizona from consideration, but there is a slight difference between that situation and the one with Kentucky. Sean Miller has commitments from two of the 10 best point guard recruits in Quinerly and Brandon Williams. While guard play is always important, there’s probably not space on a roster for three top 10 point guard recruits. In Kentucky’s case, Quickley is the only commitment for 2018 right now. It wouldn’t be the craziest thing in the world for Calipari to bring in two five star point guard recruits, so the door is still open for Grimes to head to Lexington. We should probably point out that Darius Garland (remember him from earlier?) is expected to visit the Wildcats for Big Blue Madness, so Kentucky has options when it comes to adding a second tippy-top lead guard to the roster.

Quentin Grimes was scheduled to visit Texas on Friday, with a visit to Kentucky set for this coming Friday, September 29th. We may learn a lot about what the Wildcats and Grimes are thinking about each other when next weekend rolls around.
