Last week, Marquette volleyball used a win over Hawaii to earn themselves some top 25 votes. In between now and then, the Golden Eagles went 2-1 to even their record on the year at 3-3. However, the loss was enough to change the minds of the AVCA voters, as MU is no longer receiving votes in the newest poll.
Marquette was handed a prime opportunity over the weekend to earn themselves more votes in the poll. In between matches against Miami (OH) and IUPUI, the Golden Eagles squared off with Wichita State, who sat in the #26 spot in last week’s poll. Not only did MU not pull off the win against the Shockers, they blew a 2-0 lead and ended up taking the five set loss. You can’t help but think that this may end up coming back to bite Marquette in the future, particularly with WSU ascending to #23 in this week’s poll.
Elsewhere in “Marquette Opponent Land,” UCLA stayed steady at #11, San Diego moved from #17 to #15. MU’s lone shining victory of the season, their opening win over Hawaii, took a little bit of damage as the Rainbow Wahine also dropped out of the balloting thanks to a 2-1 weekend that featured a loss to a ranked Utah team. Creighton dropped back to #9 after taking on their first loss of the season to Southern Cal, who somehow dropped a spot in this week’s poll to #19. Wisconsin stayed unbeaten and at #6 in the country, while Kentucky also maintained their spot at #13.
Speaking of the Wildcats, they’ll be in Milwaukee this weekend for the Marquette Invitational. Marquette will play Loyola-Chicago on Friday night, then tangle with Kentucky on Sunday, with first serve set for 1pm. It will almost assuredly be the first of MU’s only two cracks at a ranked team at home this season, with the other one coming on October 5th when Creighton comes to town.
