Big East Basketball What To Watch: Week 11

New week, new interesting slate of games to keep an eye on.

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-First Round-Colorado vs Connecticut
Why yes, that is the UConn mascot.

Did you realize that there’s Big East basketball ON MONDAY AFTERNOON??

It’s not quite the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Marathon that we had last year, in fact, it’s only one game, but there’s still a game this afternoon. Thus, we’re going to publish this early on Monday and then update it with the current national rankings when the new AP poll comes out later in the day.

Wednesday, January 17: #19 Seton Hall Pirates at Creighton Bluejays (7:30pm Central, FS1) - Creighton may lose their ranking when the new AP poll comes out later today thanks to their loss to Xavier, but this is still going to be a pretty important game this week. Wherever the Jays end up in the rankings, they’ll still be a tough team to beat at CenturyLink, and Seton Hall is in need of a big win after clanking their outing against Marquette last week. Someone is coming out of this one looking a bit better than they did before it.

Saturday, January 20: #1 Villanova Wildcats at Connecticut Huskies (11am Central, CBS) - Okay, so maybe this game isn’t as big of a deal as it could have been when the contracts were signed. Still, it’s Villanova going on the road to tangle with old Big East foe UConn up at the XL Center. The road aspect makes that fun, and maybe the Huskies can stir the echoes for 40 minutes and give us an entertaining contest. Or maybe Villanova will win by 25 and we can all have a laugh.

Saturday, January 20: #11 Xavier Musketeers at #19 Seton Hall Pirates (1:30pm Central, Fox) - We know that these two teams will be ranked when the new poll comes out. We also know that Seton Hall might find themselves desperately trying to avoid two straight losses orrrrrrrrr they could be trying to assemble perhaps the best week in the league this season. The Rock will most likely be jumping on Saturday for this one, and to top it all off, Xavier could actually use a major road win on their slate this season. Their best road win right now is Marquette, believe it or not.

Sunday, January 21: Marquette Golden Eagles at Villanova Wildcats (11am Central, FS1) - Hopefully Marquette women’s basketball comes through Friday’s game at Georgetown with a win to preserve their unbeaten start to league play. That will set up a big showdown on the Main Line on Sunday. A (possibly) 8-0 Golden Eagles squad looking to finish out the first trip through the league without a loss against a Wildcats squad that started Big East action with a national ranking but has already slipped up three times heading into the weekend. Heck, with DePaul coming into The Pavilion on Friday night, it’s possible that Villanova could be sitting on four losses and will be even more desperate to get a big win. To top it all off, this game is getting the FS1 treatment, and that’s never a bad deal.

Here’s the schedule for men’s hoops this week!
