THE VITALS: Marquette Golden Eagles vs Grand Valley State Lakers
THE DATE: Thursday, November 1, 2018
THE TIME: 6pm Central
THE LOCATION: Al McGuire Center, Milwaukee, WI
WHERE’S GRAND VALLEY STATE? Allendale, Michigan, which is just outside of Grand Rapids.
WHAT’S THEIR DEAL, ANYWAY? They’re a Division 2 program, and reached the second round of the Division 2 NCAA tournament last year, finishing the year with a record of 26-7. They’re picked to win their division of their conference this season. They return their top two scorers and three of their top four. Two of those three, Jenn DeBoer and Natalie Koenig, averaged about five three-point attempts per game, and both connected on over 36% of their attempts.

WHAT TO “WATCH” FOR: Marquette returns their top eight scorers from last season, including their five senior starters that guided the team to the second round of the NCAA tournament last year. While we pretty much know what we’re going to get from the returning players at this point, there are two newcomers on the roster to keep an eye on to see how they figure into Carolyn Kieger’s plans.
The first is Chloe Marotta, a freshman from Mequon, Wisconsin, and the younger sister of men’s basketball guard Cam Marotta. She was regarded as one of if not the best prospect in the state for the Class of 2018 before she blew out her knee in the summer of 2017. She missed her senior season at Homestead High School, and thus this will be her first competitive game since the injury. The other newcomer is Amanda Maqueia, a 6’4” center, who has transferred in from New Mexico Junior College. The Brazilian averaged 4.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 35 appearances for NMJC, although it’s unclear how much court time she was actually seeing. Maqueia brings a literal dimension that Marquette did not have last year: Size. She’s the tallest player on the active roster, and if she has the footspeed to keep up with Kieger’s high octane offense, then her presence inside could end up being a major factor for MU.
