The new Associated Press poll for men’s basketball is out because it’s around lunchtime on a Monday, and I’m sorry to announce that YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles are no longer earning any votes in the poll.
Last week, Marquette still had one voter hanging onto hope for the Golden Eagles, but following the loss to #2 Kansas at the NIT Tip-Off, even that vote is gone. Over the next month or so, the Golden Eagles are going to get their chances to earn the respect of the voters again, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
For example, we only have to wait as long as this coming Saturday for MU to get a chance to pop back up into the poll. Kansas State is coming to town this weekend, and the Wildcats will be bringing their #12 ranking with them. You can’t really ask for much more of an opportunity than that.
Elsewhere in the Marquette opponent ranking department, Kansas stayed steady at #2 in the new poll. There’s a trio of future foes down in the 20s, with Buffalo (#21), Wisconsin (#22), and Villanova (#23) all right in a row. It’s nice to see ‘Nova back in the top 25 to put the Big East back in the top 25 after missing out completely last week.
Creighton isn’t that far from joining them after their victory over Clemson this past weekend. The Bluejays are unofficially #29 in the country with 65 points in the poll, which is a little bit short of 100 points away from the top 25. Indiana are down in the Receiving Votes area as well, picking up 35 points. There’s St. John’s (19 points) in there, too.
Marquette returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Charleston Southern at Fiserv Forum. Tipoff is set for 7pm Central with the broadcast coming on Fox Sports Wisconsin as well as various other Fox Sports Regional affiliates.
