The Marquette volleyball team is back to being the 18th best team in the country after a week all the way back at 19. The Golden Eagles stay in the Midwest as they play Butler and Xavier on the road.
A note to keep in mind this weekend: Marquette’s magic number to clinch the #2 seed in the Big East tournament is 2. Two wins will lock it up, no matter what third place St. John’s does in their Friday night match against Seton Hall.
Big East Match #15: @ Butler Bulldogs (8-18, 5-9 Big East)

This has been a very weird season for the Butler Bulldogs. They won some decent non-con games, lost some bad non-con games and then took Creighton to five sets. Ever since the Creighton match, it has been an odd run. Their trend is to win a match and then lose two in a row. They lost their last match so the Golden Eagles’ odds are looking good.
Brooke Gregory is leading the team in kills per set at 2.99. The Bulldogs have Bri Lilly as well, who is averaging 2.53 kills per set. Gregory has been good all season and has been a huge part of the offense. MU head coach Ryan Theis should not have to worry too much about the schemes for this match.
Setting for the Bulldogs is Megan Ramseyer and Maddie Freiwald. Ramseyer is averaging 8.15 assists per set while Freiwald is averaging 8.90 assists per set. With these numbers being so close Butler just likes to get any of these two the second ball, with hopes the third going to Lilly or Gregory.
Like I said earlier, the trend is in the Golden Eagles favor. Regardless of the trend, the Golden Eagles should restart their sweep streak with ease.
Big East Match #16: @ Xavier Musketeers (9-16, 7-7 Big East)
The Xavier Musketeers are another team that has pushed Creighton to five sets. Obviously they are somewhat talented if they can push the Jays that far, which is something that even Marquette has not done in two tries this season. This could be a tough match.
Leading the offense is Laura Grossman who is averaging 2.96 kills per set. It’s been pretty much been all Grossman all the time all year as the next best average is 2.23. Coach Theis should not be worried about schemes for this match, either.
Setting for the Musketeers is Nadia Dieudonne and McKenna Estes. Side note: What is with everyone running a two setter system this year, anyway? Dieudonne is averaging 5.04 assists per set while Estes is averaging 5.23 assists per set. Those numbers are not great at all and if Xavier wants to start winning those close matches they will need to bring those numbers up.
This should be another easy win for the Golden Eagles. I am gonna say Marquette in three.
