One final Associated Press poll for 2018, and YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles are allllll the way up to #16 in the new rankings. After being ranked #18 last week, MU picked up 595 points in the new poll to fit in between #15 North Carolina with 744 points and #17 Mississippi State with 572 points.
#11 is the top spot earned by Marquette this week with three voters putting the Golden Eagles on that line: Shannon Ryan (Chicago Tribune), Jon Nyatawa (Omaha World-Herald), and Donna Ditota (Syracuse Post-Standard). #17 is the most popular landing spot for MU, with 11 voters assigning them that station. Jesse Newell (Kansas City Star) has apparently decided to become Public Enemy #1 by being the only voter to leave MU completely off his ballot.
As always, Kansas carries the banner for Marquette opponents in the top 25, coming in at #5 again this week. Buffalo moves up one spot from #21 to #20 and leads off a trio of foes with Indiana and Wisconsin coming in the next two spots. Those are the only four opponents in the top 25, but Kansas State (61 points), Villanova (43), Seton Hall (24), Louisville (3) and St. John’s (1) are all receiving votes.
Marquette returns to action on New Year’s Day with their first Big East game of the year. They’ll be visiting St. John’s and their one 25th place vote with tipoff on FS1 set for 6pm Central.
