We have our first in-season Maverik media men’s lacrosse top 20 poll of the 2018 campaign and YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles are still ranked.
However, they have fallen a bit. They’re now #20 in the country, down from #17 in the preseason edition of the rankings.
I have to say, that is absolutely ridiculous. I know for a fact that the Golden Eagles have not lost a game yet this season, and for them to drop while not losing a single time is the most absurd thing I have ev.....
[puts finger to imaginary earpiece]
what? Are you sure? Huh. Okay then.
Folks, I’m being told that in addition to not losing a game yet this season, Marquette has also not won a game this season.
This is due to their season opener coming up this Saturday when they host Jacksonville. It’s still a little weird to ding MU a few spots when they didn’t play at all, but thus is the nature of polls, I guess.
The top 20 continues to be stacked with teams that Marquette will see this season. Duke Blue Devils remains at #1, and Denver Pioneers moves up one spot to #3. Ohio State Buckeyes made a major splash with wins over [puts on monocle] Cleveland State and then-#20 Boston University, and thus the Buckeyes have made a jump from #13 to #6. Sure, why not. Notre Dame Fighting Irish has dropped six spots to #13, while Villanova Wildcats vaulted their way into the poll at #15 thanks to their road overtime win over then-#12 Penn State.
Down in the receiving votes department, you’ll find both Providence Friars and Georgetown Hoyas. Presuming that the list is in point total order, those two squads are unofficially #28 and #30 in the country. Man, this league schedule is going to be just an absolute bear.
As mentioned, MU opens the season on Saturday when they host 1-1 Jacksonville at Valley Fields. Face-off is set for noon Central time and I presume that the game will be played inside the Andy Glockner Memorial Bubble at Valley Fields.
