Marquette men’s lacrosse is back in the Maverik media top 20 poll this week after moving to 2-0 with a road win over Detroit-Mercy on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles started out the year ranked #17 in the country, slipped to #20 before they played, dropped out after beating Jacksonville in their opener, but now are back in at #19. They earned 73 points in the balloting, which puts them in between #18 Johns Hopkins at 83 points and #20 Princeton at 38.
This sets up one of the best games of this week, as Marquette will be tangling with #6 Ohio State on Friday afternoon. The Buckeyes needed overtime to slip past the same Jacksonville team that pushed MU to the brink in the season opener, and that is likely the reason why OSU dropped one spot from #5 last week.
The rest of Marquette’s schedule is stacked up with great teams, too. Duke is #3 this week, Denver is #5, Villanova is #7, Notre Dame is #8, and Georgetown rounds out the ranked teams on the slate at #17. Robert Morris, who will be coming to Milwaukee for Marquette’s next home game, are earning votes this week, and is unofficially ranked #25 this week. I got tired just typing that, so I can’t imagine the amount of effort it’s going to take for the Golden Eagles to even go 4-3 against the seven teams earning votes on their schedule.
The first draw for Marquette and Ohio State is set for 4pm Central on Friday at Wisner Stadium in Pontiac, Michigan, as their first game of the 2018 Midwest Lacrosse Classic. Tragically, it appears that there is not going to be a video stream for that game, nor for MU’s contest against Bellarmine on Sunday morning.
