Marquette Men’s Lacrosse Lurches Back Into Receiving Votes In The Maverik Top 20 Poll

It’s a “surprising but not surprising” kind of thing.

Back on Saturday, Marquette men’s lacrosse picked up a very big and important win over #18 Georgetown. It snapped a three game losing streak for the Golden Eagles, gave them a second quality win on the season, and launched them into first place in the Big East at 1-0.

While Marquette started the season ranked in the Maverik top 20 poll, no one would have been surprised if the voters collectively agreed that the three game losing streak disqualified the Golden Eagles from earning a vote after beating the #18 team.

Instead, the other thing happened, and MU is listed as the final team receiving votes this week.

What this probably means is that one voter gave Marquette a 20th place vote. Inside Lacrosse doesn’t release point totals for the receiving votes teams, so we don’t know for certain how the balloting shook out for the 11 teams down in that area. But when you’re listed last in a group that’s not in alphabetical order, I think it’s safe to say that means one 20th place vote.

There are two other Big East teams in the RV area, as Georgetown dropped out of the top 20 following their loss to MU, and St. John’s rises into the voting for the first time this season after getting a 9-8 upset victory of then-#19 Hofstra to move to 6-2 on the season. We’re going to have to watch out for the Johnnies as the season continues, as their only losses are to two teams that were ranked in the top 10 at the time. The trio of Big East teams are also joined by Ohio State, who continues to be on a bit of a slide since MU defeated them in Michigan earlier this season. They’ve suffered losses to Towson, Denver, and Notre Dame, although you can’t really call those bad losses.

Mentioning the Pioneers and the Irish brings us to the teams on Marquette’s schedule that are ranked this week. Denver, the preseason favorite in the Big East, has flipped spots with Duke, with the Pioneers sitting at #3 and the Blue Devils sitting at #5. MU will play those two teams, both on the road, in the final two games of the regular season. Notre Dame dips three spots to #7 this week, while Villanova, who will be in Milwaukee on Saturday, stays steady at #8. Yes, that’s four top 10 opponents over Marquette’s final six games.

Robert Morris and Michigan, both of whom own victories over Marquette this season, have made their way into the poll since the Golden Eagles played them. RMU is steady at #14 this week, while Michigan jumps into the poll in this iteration, moving from #26 to #15.

First draw against #8 Villanova on Saturday is scheduled for 11am at Valley Fields. The game is sold out at this time, but it will be streamed on GoMarquette.com.
